2021.10.20 20:42 redbeanmilktea Was rejected(?) because of long distance

I met an amazing guy off of a dating app. I wasn't expecting much since I never really had any success there. There were always dealbreakers or red flags that would pop up as soon as I started getting to know a person I thought I liked.
I found out after asking for a date that their job requires them to relocate every few months. I thought this was weird considering they mentioned it makes getting into relationships hard yet they had agreed to a date with me. I tried not to pry further into it and met up with him a few times.
The third time I met with him, he stayed over my place for two nights where he stayed in a guest room. On our date, I did go back to his place, but nothing happened. When he was at my place I decided to bring it up again and asked him wether or not we should continue dating. His answer at first was hesitant and he said he enjoyed our time together so yes, but then I stopped him and said that's not what I meant. I mention him saying in the past that it's hard for him to be in a relationship because of his career and he thinks a little more before he says "then I don't think we should pursue this."
I'm not gonna lie, despite thinking I was going to take it well my heart kind of sank. I asked him if it was the issue of long distance and he said yes. When I asked if long distance wasn't an issue, would he still have pursued it and he answered yes. Most of my relationships were long distance so I was willing to make it work on my side, but seeing how adamant he was about not wanting a long distance thing, I was a little sad. It made me wonder why he agreed to going on dates with me in the first place.
He seemed to ponder really hard about something after that conversation and when I asked what he was thinking so hard about he wouldn't tell me.
I asked what he planned to do in terms of relationships since he told me he wasn't looking for anything casual and he said he'd just have to find someone in his field or someone who has the ability to travel with him.
I don't remember the last time I felt like I had a connection so strong and I feel so heartbroken that the conversation sort of just ended there. There wasn't any attempt at considering making it work somehow or trying it out. What I found odd about this conversation was that they seemed surprised that I was actively pursuing them in the first place. Despite me having had asked them out on a date twice. I thought that was obvious enough that I liked him.
I know that long distance can be real deal breakers for some people but I wish we could've at least tried.
We decided to stay good friends but it feels like the more I spend time with him, the more actual feelings grow for him. Part of me has this little hope that we can continue to grow as friends and get to know each other more and end up rediscussing it in the future. But I also don't want to hope for something that might not happen. It sucks because this person really checked off everything for me.

Re: United States v. Ghislaine Maxwell, 20 Cr. 330 (AJN)
Dear Judge Nathan,
With the government’s consent, the defendant has requested to file the parties’ joint proposed juror questionnaire and joint proposed voir dire under seal. Letter of U.S. Att’y, October 12, 2021 (Dkt. No. 339) (“Letter”). The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and the 17 undersigned news media organizations respectfully urge the Court to deny the defendant’s request. Globe Newspaper Co. v. Superior Ct. for Norfolk Cty., 457 U.S. 596, 609 n.25 (1982) (stating that “representatives of the press and general public must be given an opportunity to be heard on the question of their exclusion” (cleaned up)).1 Both the common law and the First Amendment afford the public a qualified right of access to criminal proceedings. Indeed, the Supreme Court has long recognized that public access to criminal proceedings assures both the fairness and legitimacy of the criminal justice system. Id. at 606 (“Public scrutiny of a criminal trial enhances the quality and safeguards the integrity of the factfinding process, 1 The defendant also has requested that the Court order “individual sequestered juror voir dire and limited counsel-conducted voir dire.” ECF No. 341. The government opposes both requests. ECF No. 355. To the extent that the defendant seeks to limit press and public access to any aspect of voir dire in this case, the same constitutional and common law presumptions of public access discussed herein apply. Case 1:20-cr-00330-AJN Document 362 Filed 10/20/21 Page 1 of 4
2 with benefits to both the defendant and to society as a whole.”). Voir dire is a critical stage of criminal proceedings, and the public interest in favor of access to voir dire is correspondingly weighty. United States v. Shkreli, 260 F. Supp. 3d 257, 259–60 (E.D.N.Y. 2017) (“Press coverage of voir dire, no less than coverage of opening statements or the cross examination of a key witness, contributes to the fairness of trials.”); accord United States v. Avenatti, 2021 WL 1819679, at *1 (S.D.N.Y. May 6, 2021). Recognizing that interest, the Supreme Court has held that the First Amendment requires the voir dire process be presumptively open to the press and public. Press-Enter. Co. v. Superior Ct. of California, Riverside Cty., 464 U.S. 501, 510 (1984). Juror questionnaires, which are used to facilitate and expedite the jury selection process, are subject to the same presumption of openness as that which attaches to voir dire generally. See United States v. King, 140 F.3d 76, 82 (2d Cir. 1998) (including juror questionnaires when analyzing whether limited closure of voir dire violated public’s right of access); see also Order, In re The Washington Post, No. 15-1293 (4th Cir. Apr. 27, 2015) (stating that “the public enjoys a presumptive right of access to voir dire proceedings, including voir dire questionnaires”); In re Access to Jury Questionnaires, 37 A.3d 879, 886 (D.C. 2012) (“Every court that has decided the issue has treated jury questionnaires as part of the voir dire process and thus subject to the presumption of public access.” (citing In re South Carolina Press Ass’n, 946 F.2d 1037, 1041 (4th Cir. 1991), and collecting other cases)); Stephens Media, LLC v. Eighth Judicial District Court, 221 P.3d 1240, 1245 (Nev. 2009); Forum Commc’ns Co. v. Paulson, 752 N.W.2d 177, 182–83 (N.D. 2008); Ohio ex rel. Beacon Journal Publ’g Co. v. Bond, 781 N.E.2d 180, 187–89 (Ohio 2002); United States v. Bonds, No. C 07-00732 SI, 2011 WL 902207, at *3 (N.D. Cal. Mar. 14, 2011); United States v. McDade, 929 F. Supp. 815, 817 n.4 (E.D. Pa. 1996); In re Washington Case 1:20-cr-00330-AJN Document 362 Filed 10/20/21 Page 2 of 4
3 Post, No. 92-301, 1992 WL 233354, at *2 (D.D.C. July 23, 1992); Copley Press, Inc. v. Superior Court, 228 Cal. App. 3d 77, 89 (1991). The presumption of openness that attaches to voir dire—including juror questionnaires— “may be overcome only by an overriding interest based on findings that closure is essential to preserve higher values and is narrowly tailored to serve that interest.’” Shkreli, 260 F. Supp. 3d at 260 (quoting Press–Enter. Co., 464 U.S. at 510). “Where the overriding interest to be protected is the defendant’s right to a fair trial, the court must make specific findings that ‘there is a substantial probability that the defendant’s right to a fair trial will be prejudiced by publicity that closure would prevent and, second, reasonable alternatives to closure cannot adequately protect the defendant’s fair trial rights.’” Id. (quoting ABC, Inc. v. Stewart, 360 F.3d 90, 98–99 (2d Cir. 2004)). “The Second Circuit has explained that the party seeking to restrict press access bears a ‘heavy’ burden.” Id. (quoting Stewart, 360 F.3d at 106). Here, the defense manifestly fails to carry its “heavy burden.” Id. The defendant’s request to seal provides the Court with no basis on which to make the specific factual findings required to conceal voir dire, including the parties’ joint juror questionnaire, from the public. Stewart, 360 F.3d at 98. In an effort to justify the defendant’s request, the Letter speculates that “media coverage may prejudice the jury selection process.” Letter 1. Such conclusory speculation cannot overcome the deeply rooted presumption of openness applicable to voir dire. Accordingly, the Court should order the parties to file the proposed juror questionnaire and proposed voir dire on the public docket.

2021.10.20 20:42 Adventurous_Lynx6972 An under-rated cleaning product.

Okay, I'm pretty sure this is the right place for this, please correct me if I'm wrong!
So. Growing up around animals we ALWAYS had a spray bottle that's about 1/3 vinegar to 2/3 water. It's great for telling a misbehaving dog who's not listening and is quite gentle due to the concentration.
HOWEVER, it was also a very useful cleaner! Especially when used in a 1:1 ratio. It's an awesome deodoriser and disinfectant! I use it allllll of the time to clean up messes that my animals make, by accident or on purpose. Those potty training will know where I'm coming from.
Not to mention that standard white vinegar is dirt cheap and can be brought in large quantities almost anywhere! I can honestly not recommend it enough.
Especially since I work in hospitality. Food safety and all that requires heavy duty cleaners (which have a habit of making you cough) and some general cleaners work better as a paint stripper. My fellow kiwis probably know alllll about the Pams General Cleaner. So personally at home I like to give the chemicals a backseat whenever possible.
Let me know if you knew this OR what other natural products you use for cleaning! I'm always open to more ideas :D

2021.10.20 20:42 CanopyCrane Looking for Support! Could we share our toolkit for fighting trauma?

So I am reading the book 'Language of Emotions' and they say that 'It takes a village' ( In terms of skill set). This takes me to my earlier days where Intellectualism and Draining will power were the only skill set I had. Currently I am doing the following activities

  1. Journaling - Talking to my inner child. Aimed to develop self-connection
  2. Self Monitoring - I observe myself and make notes about how I feel. This has helped me a lot in managing anxiety.
  3. Slow Reading - I am chewing 2 books, to be completed in 6-8 months. Helps in gaining knowledge and reading just calms me down.
  4. Somatic experience - I am not too deep into it but I do some low impact Yoga and focus on my bodily sensations. Helps to break dissociation.
  5. Art - Painting, Embroidery, Photography and Gardening. Helps to relax.
All these activities don't take much time. Just few minutes spread out during the whole day. I am wondering if I can add something to this list in order to awaken and employ an ability different than intellect ( except meditation ofcourse). I am curious to know what methods do y'all use to be fight trauma and be balanced in your everyday life. Thank you in advance.
